AHH Is Expanding its Service Offerings to Douglas County!
Artists Helping the Homeless is excited about an opportunity to expand its reach and impact. Officials in Douglas County, Kansas approached founder Kar Woo about replicating the Nonprofit’s Be the Change program in Lawrence.
“I’m truly thankful to have this chance to prove what AHH does daily in Kansas City will work in other places,” Woo said. “The goal in Lawrence is to provide respite housing and support for men suffering from homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. Currently, there is a gap in services.”
Be the Change began 10 years ago through a partnership with St. Luke’s Hospital to address the non-emergency issues for people experiencing homelessness. After hitting the ground running with no formal social work training, Woo quickly realized people were falling through the cracks. Be the Change evolved into a missing link program providing a full line of seamless services through multiple collaborations. Annually, Artists Helping the Homeless serves over 2,000 people and operates seven days a week providing housing, counseling, transportation, legal, medical and dental care, scholarships, and more.
“We are the safety net that helps people thrive,” Woo said. “To expand the program, and reach even more people we are asking for the continued support and guidance from the community.”
In early May the Douglas County Commission approved the agreement. Currently, AHH is in the process of raising capital to fund part of the program.
“God is giving us a chance to test and fine tune our philosophy and concept. I couldn’t be more thankful for this blessing,” said Woo.
We currently have a goal of raising $125,000 for the down payment of a duplex, which will provide a shelter for the homeless and a home base for AHH from which to provide additional services. Please consider donating $25, $50, $100, $1,000 or more, or anything in between! Any amount is greatly appreciated and will serve a vital need in helping the area homeless get back on their feet, while meeting the immediate needs of safety and basic care.
